Social Media and Life

Nowadays, social media has become an important part of many people’s social development. It couldn’t be hard for you to remember the last time you arrange an appointment or join a party with the help of Facebook. Absolutely, social media, besides Facebook, is doing more than just help people engage in activities.  With the development of media, social media plays a variety of roles and has different responsibilities in different situations. Social media is influencing the development of people’s life and the influence is extending.

Social Media and Communication

Image

Without any doubts, social media is one of the simplest ways to reach out with the world. It brings convenience to people when communicating. With the purpose of communicating with people quickly and easily, cyber languages came out and spread among the Internet users. Social media has changed how people communicate . It breaks the rule that one person speaks and one person listens. There could be thousands and millions audiences for a single sentence post by one person. People sharing the same information on social media might have similar interests or characteristics. The point is sharing so it is no longer necessary to build a conversation. People may leave a comment or not. Therefore, you have to pick up information meaningful for yourself and sort out fake information based on your judgment. It could be hard sometimes.

Social Media and Politics

Image

Impact on elections

Politics become more and more transparent to people because of the impact social media has on politics. Once the truth starts to come out, the public could have access to actually engage in political activities and exercise the power of the public. In other words, politics are no longer just about tactics. Bill Clinton might have lost the campaign if social media was popular in 1992. Many of his scandals exposed to the public after the election. Romney doesn’t have the same luck as Clinton does. Even though Romney never had big scandals, social media have always found out and exposed little things (maybe not that little for a future president) about him. It seems that social media could always notice information ahead of mainstream press and information spreads extensively. Bad comments keep fresh and the opponents would love to see that.

Here is a YouTube video that talks about social media in politics.

Voting through Vine

Representative Swalwell voted through Vine, which is an app owned by Twitter, to protest the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act . If more and more people vote like this, the relationship between social media and politics may become closer, which is a good thing for us to see.

Social Media and Economy

Every thing in the world has its own two sides. Social media is not an exception when it comes to economy. The relationship between social media and economy is always a controversial topic.

Social media hurts the economy

Image

Mark Schaefer has a premise  that economy finally improved with the expense of the time spent on the social web. It is not hard to imagine that when people work hard for a better economy, they have less time to read blogs, tweets, or attend a random party threw by a person they do not even really know.

Social media saved the economy

Andy Nathan hold the view that social media is the force that supersedes the economy. Social media companies create a lot of job positions, which has lower the unemployment rate. Social media also change the way people communicate and do business. Social media stimulate the growth of economy. Ads on social media websites like Facebook are a large part of the revenue.

Helping or hurting?

If you ask me the question social media is helping or hurting the economy, I would say social media is just a tool or a way to generate the economy. It is hard to find useful information among the over-size Internet. What matters most is that you need to learn how to use it right. Never to forget, social media cannot drive the economy, but people do.

FOMO

Image

There are reasons why social media prevails so easily and quickly in such a few years without a sign of dropping. Information spread through social media help people entertain somehow. Social media is closely connected with our life. You may get trouble, for example, a social disorder called FOMO(The Fear of Missing Out), if you over use social media. People may feel nervous when they do not touch their phones or updating Facebook, checking e-mails. Social networking has been blamed. I found an FOMO quiz, you could test yourself if you are interested. If you have FOMO, you need to realize that social media has already taken a lot of your time away. I think the most effective way to fight with FOMO is to adjust days without social media. It would be just a few suffering days.

Gotta know something? Surf the Internet!

QQ图片20130627220042

We rely on the multifunctional Internet more than ever. We get the information we need and share the information we know. We need the aid of the Internet to get information like emails, daily search, shopping, news, socialization, and tourism. According to a factbookfrom the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), the Internet using in Canada is growing rapidly. All kinds of information are circulating on the web, including both useful and fake information.

Watch out for Fake Information

QQ图片20130627220516

I spend a lot of my leisure time surfing the Internet everyday. I read news, watch videos, and updated my Facebook to see what is going on with my friends. Many times a news post by my friends on Facebook shocked me but a few days later, it turned out to be fake information. Fake information on the Internet often annoys me. Do you feel the same?

Phil Bradley has a list of fake websites. These websites seem to be real and convincing, but they all contained bogus information.

An article on the Huffinton Post mentioned the research by Harris Interactive found that 98% of the participants who are American users choose not to totally believe what they see on the Internet. The reseach also showed that 94% of the participants believed false information can lead to bad influence.

It Bothers…

For me, there has not been any serious problem that are caused by fake information in my life, but it is not true for everybody.

It bothers a brand.

When you shop online or reserve a hotel room, how often do you read and trust the online review? 81% of travelers consider reading user review as a necessary progress on travel-decision making. Fake reviews may bother a brand because they play an enormous role in this Internet era.   However, a travel agency website usually receive a number of reviews much more than customer actually came. Fake information may make other people misunderstand a brand. Companies should manage reviews in order to protect their brands reputation even if it can be complicated. Frederic Gonzalo lists some activities a brand should do.

Here’s a short video for you to learn how to spot a fake review

It bothers social stability

China arrests more than 10 people who spread rumors about H7N9 bird flu online. These people claimed new cases of H7N9 happened in their area thus created mass panic. China’s Communist Party always hammers at maintaining the stability of the society. Suppression of rumors online has always been important because they often spread quickly and extensively.

How Fake Information Spread Online

QQ图片20130627220358

Some people can tell whether the information they read is true or not. However, people who trust the rumors pass the information around Facebook and Twitters simply by the “Like” button. Then, people who doubted it see their friends passing the information begin to doubt themselves and join them passing it. In this way rumors online spread so fast and fool more and more people.

Is it legal?

Fake information online could bring up troubles. Is it legal to spread these rumor? The answer is, it depends. It depends on what the information is, how bad the consequence it causes, what country you are in, etc.

Fake Names

Using fakes names can get you arrested. It is one of  6 Laws You’ve Broken Without Even Realizing. It listed by Cezary Jan Strusiewicz.

In the “ faking name” part, it mentioned a story of being arrested because of faking online profile for boss.

North Korea: Not Punishable

A defendant was announced to be not guilty in the court because the Constitutional court denied spreading fake information online is an act of harming the public good. However, some North Korean newspaper wrote that Korea needs laws to regulate rumors online in order to maintain national security. See the original article for details.

Tips

It seems that fake information on the internet will never die, but we need to know how to avoid them. Make sure the author is professional.

  1. Are there any attributed quotes?
  2. Look for the origin of the quotes.
  3. Do not trust websites with inappropriate ads。

Mobile phones are taking over our life

How often do you use your cell phones? Are you getting tired of your cell phones like I do?  Are you realizing cell phones are taking over your life? If you have not think about these questions yet or you have no idea of them, watch the video on this website and listen to the short radio.

Look! Cell phones are messing everything up even though when people are just walking. Can you imagine how serious accidents would be which using mobile phones when driving causes? Let’s see why this is a problem.

Reasons why drivers need their mobile phones

Using mobile phones 201008230104321465while driving

Of course, mobile phones can be helpful to drivers sometimes. When there is an accident, drivers need a mobile phone to make emergency calls. Also when the car breaks down, the driver needs to call for help. Or drivers may want others to know where they are and when to arrive. However, drivers should not use mobile phones while driving because it is dangerous and illegal.

How can mobile phones be distracting?

There have been a lot of investigations and experiments on this issue and it turns out using mobile phones affects driving behaviours in many ways.

In the experiment It impairs drivers’ detection ability, thus, drivers need more brake reaction time, and hands-free devices or voice controlled interface cannot help remove the safety problem (Lamble, 1999). The reason is that using mobile phones increases heart rate and respiratory rate, which may increase the cognitive demand (Park, 2013). A person using a mobile phone while driving is four times likely to have an accident than a person do not (McEvoy, 2005). Using mobile phones when driving also makes it harder for drivers to keep in lane, predict well, and keep a good distance from the car in front. You cannot control your car well without your full attention.

To sum up, you should not use mobile phones while driving because it affects reaction time which may lead to accidents. When you are using it, you are putting your life and other people’s lives in danger.

Relative laws

                                    Hand-hold mobile phones are prohibited

This problem has already drawn the attention of  the department concerned in many countries. Legislations and laws has been implemented.

Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has stated laws and funds on their website. It shows that different laws are implementing in different regions in the U.S. In some regions, drivers are prohibited from using hand-held cell phones while driving. Some states ban all the cell phone use by novice drivers only or school bus drivers only. Text messaging is often banned by many places.

Let’s see how it is regulated in Canada. We can see from CAA, all 10 provinces have legislations related to cell phone driving. Drivers should be fined by using hand-held phone. 2 provinces ban both the use of hand-held electronic entertainment devices while driving. No Canadian jurisdiction bans drivers from using hands-free cell phones while driving. It also has a website list of laws in different provinces. All of us who drive need to take a look at how it is regulated in the province we live.

Even though usually hands-free devices are not banned, we should know that accidents would not be eliminated because we just free our hands but not our minds.

What should we do while driving

I would recommend do not use your mobile phones at all when you are driving, including voice-to-text devices, Bluetooth headphones. Switch you mobile phones on the “silent” or “meeting” model. Do not let the ring disturb you. If you have to wait for some important calls, you should stop the car and then answer the phone. If you call somebody who is driving, you should tell them you will call them back or wait until the driver stop the car.

Conclusion

Mobile phones can affect drivers’ behavior in many ways. According to laws in many regions, drivers can never use hand-held mobile phones when driving. For driving safety concerns, hands-free devices should also be avoided. Drivers should concentrate on driving other than phone calls or texts. Remember, You are four times more likely to have a crash if you use a mobile phone when you are driving, so please do not drive with distractions.
